When QB is installed you can click or double-click the icon for a company file and it will be opened by QB but backup files are different and cannot be opened, only restored to create a new or overwrite an existing working file.

And as far as restoring from a USB it is usually better to migrate your backup file from the USB drive onto the same hard drive the program is installed on.

Backing up to USB works just fine but it is the restore from that tends to cause issues and moving or cvopying from thumb drive to hard drive only takes seconds.
